CPLOT Software

By David Delene: Update November 16, 2004

CPLOT is a software program that quickly plots data from flights of the University of North Dakota's Citation research aircraft.  CPLOT is written in IDL which is a commercial software development package.  Anyone can run the program by downloading the cplot.sav file and using the IDL virtual machine.  No IDL license is needed to run CPLOT.

Download the cplot.sav file.

1.      Create a directory on your computer to save the "cplot.sav" file in, i.e. C:\Program Files\cplot.

To do this go toStart, s elect my computer, click Local Disk (C:).  Then select Program Files, click make new folder on the left side column.  Enter cplot as the file name, close.

2.Download the "cplot.sav" file, found here on to your computer (right click, save target as), i.e. c:\Program Files\cplot. This will save the downloaded file to the folder you created.

Download and install the IDL virtual machine.

1.             The IDL virtual machine can be downloaded from  https://www.ittvis.com/download.  Note that the download file is very large (~167 Mbytes).  You may want to order the IDL installation CD and use it instead of downloading the file.  For users at UND, I have the latest installation disks (see IDL installation CD instructions).

2.      Run the IDL installation program, i.e. idl61.exe

3.            Choose to install IDL.

4.      When asked, choose to install the "IDL Virtual Machine", you don't need the full "IDL" development package.

IDL installation program instructions:

1.            Insert IDL installation CD into drive.

2.      Click Install IDL on pop up window, click next, click yes, click yes, and enter your user name when asked.

3.      When a screen with the option of IDL or IDL Virtual Machine appears, select IDL Virtual Machine.

4.            Click next, click next, installation will proceed (takes a few minutes), click finish.

Create a shortcut on the desktop to start IDL.

1.      Right click on the desktop back ground

2.      Select New/shortcut

3.      Type in the following for the location (Assuming IDL6.1 was installed in the default location and the cplot.sav file was placed in c:\Program Files\cplot).  c:\RSI\IDL61\bin\bin.x86\idlrt.exe -vm="c:\Program Files\cplot\cplot.sav"

4.            Enter shortcut name for new file you will use on desktop.
